Carsten is a civil engineer with more than 25 years of experience in the highways sector. After graduating in 1999 he joined the Highway Construction Technology department at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in southwest Germany as a research assistant and received his PhD in 2004.
He went on to become head of the department, giving lectures and conducting national and European research projects mainly in the field of asphalt, road construction materials and road pavements.
In 2006 Dr Karcher started his own consultancy, Asphalt Pavements for Europe, alongside his work at KIT, providing trainings, consultancy, expert reports, moderations, and presentations.
In 2013 he left KIT to focus 100% on his consultancy. Since then he has been active in the fields of technical expertise, advocacy and public relations for various clients. In the same year his consultancy took over the role as Director of the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) and in 2019 the post as Secretary General, where his main activities have been the development of the association, health, safety, environmental and technical issues, political items, lobbying and events organisation including the E&E Congresses 2016, 2021, 2024 and 2028.
Dr Karcher is and has been active in many technical committees, working groups, supervisory bodies of research projects and associations nationally and internationally. His areas of expertise include asphalt as a construction material, asphalt engineering and technology, testing methods for road construction materials, damage analyses of roads, load-bearing capacity of pavements, the technical evaluation of the structure of pavements, raod maintenance and pavement management.
Carsten has given many presentations at national and international conferences and is author of numerous technical papers as well as the author of the German reference handbook for road construction and maintenance “Straßenbau und Straßenerhaltung”.
Dr Karcher also has experience in the field of public relations. He was a participant in a live political talk show on German television, gives television and radio interviews and hosts the EAPA podcast “The RoadCast”.
Carsten Karcher is married with two children and lives with his family in Karlsruhe.
